Aeron vs Embody: which Herman Miller is right for you?

We repair both every week. Here is the honest comparison, including what breaks on each one.

Both are serious chairs at serious prices, and most comparisons read like spec sheets. Here is the version you get from people who take them apart: they are built for two different ways of sitting, and which one suits you depends on which sitter you are.

The Aeron is a work chair

It is built for actual task work: upright, engaged, leaning into a desk for hours. The mesh keeps you cool, the posture keeps you honest, and everything about it assumes you are there to get something done. In our view it is the best all rounder Herman Miller makes, and it is the one we would put most people in without hesitation.

The Embody is a comfort chair

The Embody suits a different sitter. Its back conforms to you rather than holding you, which makes it better for lounging, gaming and long relaxed sessions in a reclined position. If you naturally settle into a slouched sitting position and want a chair that works with that rather than fighting it, the Embody is the better pick.

The cross-legged question

If you like sitting cross legged, buy the Embody. Its wider, flatter seat allows it; the Aeron's mesh seat and frame edge simply do not. Worth saying, though: the position generally recommended for long healthy desk sessions is not cross legged at all. It is upright, feet flat on the floor, knees and elbows at right angles. If that is the posture you are aiming for, the Aeron holds you in it better.

What breaks on each

This is the part spec sheets never tell you. On the Aeron it is the gas lift, arm pads, castors and tilt tension, and every one of those is a replaceable part we stock or fit routinely. On the Embody it is usually the tilt and the seat, and this is where the gap really shows. Embody parts are considerably harder to get and more expensive, and in most cases they carry a much longer lead time because they are sourced from America. Aeron parts are widely available by comparison, which is why an Aeron repair is usually days and an Embody repair can be weeks of waiting. If you are buying a chair to keep for fifteen years, the Aeron is the easier and cheaper one to keep alive. That repairability is part of why it is our all rounder pick.

The verdict

Task work, most people, longest serviceable life: Aeron. Lounging, gaming, slouchers and cross-legged sitters: Embody. If you land on the Aeron, our refurbished Aerons are rebuilt and tested in our workshop. And if you already own either chair and it is misbehaving, that is our day job.
