What a Steelcase repair involves
We diagnose by component rather than judging the chair as a whole. A sinking seat is a cylinder, matched to the chair and to whoever sits in it. A recline that won't hold tension is usually the tension control or the mechanism hardware rather than a dead chair, where the mechanism is sound it gets stripped, cleaned, re-greased and re-torqued, and where a housing has cracked or a spring has failed we fit the correct unit for that chair so the geometry and control positions stay right.
Lumbar and back adjusters are their own repair. On chairs like the Leap the back support is adjustable in more than one direction, and an adjuster that no longer holds is a wear part rather than a reason to replace the chair. Arms are treated as pads, tops, height columns and yokes, so only the failed piece is renewed, and castors are swapped as a set with the right wheel for your flooring.
Upholstery and padding are handled the same way: worn covers re-covered, opened seams re-stitched where the surrounding material is sound, and collapsed foam replaced with the correct density so the seat supports weight properly again.
Is a Steelcase chair worth repairing?
Almost always. A new Leap or Gesture is a four-figure chair, and what you're paying for is the frame, the back structure and the mechanism engineering, none of which is typically what has failed. Cylinders, castors, arm pads, adjusters and upholstery are wearing parts that were designed to be renewed, so replacing the chair over one of them is the most expensive route to a small fix.
