Upholstery and mesh are what you're actually in contact with all day, so their condition drives how a chair is judged. A sound chair with a sagging seat gets written off as worn out, when the frame, mechanism and base underneath it have years of service left.
Signs the seat or back needs work
- The mesh has stretched and no longer supports the lower back.
- A split or hole has opened in the seat mesh or fabric.
- Foam has flattened, so you can feel the pan underneath.
- Seams have opened along the front edge of the seat.
- The chair looks tired next to others on the same floor.
What the repair involves
Mesh and woven suspension seats are held under tension in a frame. Where the material has stretched but is intact, re-tensioning restores the support. Where it has split, the panel is replaced with the correct material for the model rather than something approximate, mesh varies in weave, stretch and thickness, and the wrong panel changes how the chair carries weight even if it looks similar.
Fabric-upholstered seats and backs are treated differently. Small tears and open seams can often be patched or re-stitched where the surrounding material is sound. Where padding has collapsed, the cover comes off, new foam of the right density goes in and the cover is re-fitted and re-tensioned so it sits without wrinkles. Compressed foam is a common reason a chair feels unsupportive despite everything mechanical being fine.
Patch repairs and re-padding can often be done on-site. Full mesh panel replacement needs a bench and controlled tension, so those chairs come back to the workshop and return to you finished.
Why re-cover rather than replace
The mesh or cover is a surface layer on a chair whose expensive engineering sits underneath it. Replacing the whole chair to fix a split panel means discarding an aluminium frame, a serviceable tilt mechanism, a working cylinder and a set of arms.
Renewing the seat surface also has the biggest visible effect of any repair. A floor of chairs that looks worn out is the usual trigger for a bulk replacement order, and it's frequently the one thing that a workshop day can reverse.
